- 8 inch block uses 2 inch finished Half square triangles & squares
- 10 inch block uses 2 ½ inch finished Half square triangles & squares
- 12 inch block uses 3 inch finished Half square triangles & squares
- 16 inch block uses 4 inch finished Half square triangles & squares
Using Squares to Create Triangles.
Follow the measurements below to cut fabric
Triangles can be made from one light and one dark fabric
- CREATE 2 inch finished Half Square Triangles CUT 2 7/8 inch Squares
- CREATE 2 1/2 inch finished Half Square Triangles CUT 3 3/8 inch squares
- CREATE 3 inch finished Half Square Triangles CUT 3 7/8 inch Squares
- CREATE 4 inch finished Half Square Triangles CUT 4 7/8 inch Squares
Making Your Half Square Triangles
Mark one fabric from corner to corner
Layer two fabrics with right sides together
Mark sewing lines ¼ inch from center line on each side and sew. If using a ¼ inch foot you can just sew ¼ inch on each side of the center drawn line
After sewing the two seams, cut down the center on original drawn line
Press open, you have created two half square triangle blocks
Arrange Half square triangles and squares to create Sailboat Design.
*Note: Bottom squares can be scrappy or one strip can be cut to fit block.
Sew block together using ¼ inch Seams.
